Okyir Festival
Okyir Festival
This is celebrated during the third Awukudae of the year on the Akan Calender. It is a one-day activity. On that festive day a ban is placed on the entry of the Okye River, hence people are not allowed to fetch water from the river.
In the afternoon the Chiefs and People gather at the tomb of the founder of Breman State which is in the centre of the Town (Roundabout) to perform purification rites. These rites are performed with water from River Okye. After such rites, three (3) gunshots are fired to lift the ban on fetching water from River Okye.
The Omanhene is then carried in a special palanquin, amidst drumming and dancing from one end of the Town to another. In the early hours of the following day, the Kyidom Division performs rituals at Ayeyewano Shrine.
